Description
Old Fashioned Baked Beans are a hearty and flavorful dish made with navy beans, beef, and a rich sauce.

- 1 lb dried navy beans
- 8 oz beef, diced small
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce or ketchup
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 bay leaf
Instructions
- Soak beans overnight in water. Drain, refill with fresh water, bring to a boil, then simmer for 1 hour. Drain and reserve 1½ cups of the cooking liquid.
- In a Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the diced beef until browned. Add onion and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Stir in tomato sauce, molasses, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, pepper, and bay leaf.
- Add cooked beans and reserved liquid. Bring to a gentle simmer for 2–3 minutes.
- Cover and bake at 325°F (160°C) for 2–3 hours. Uncover for the last 20–30 minutes to thicken the sauce. Stir occasionally and add more liquid if needed.
- Remove bay leaf, adjust seasoning, and serve warm.
Notes
- Add a small pinch of baking soda to boiling beans if they remain tough.
- Adjust sauce thickness by adding more reserved liquid or baking uncovered longer.
