Description

Old Fashioned Baked Beans are a hearty and flavorful dish made with navy beans, beef, and a rich sauce.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb dried navy beans
  • 8 oz beef, diced small
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Soak beans overnight in water. Drain, refill with fresh water, bring to a boil, then simmer for 1 hour. Drain and reserve 1½ cups of the cooking liquid.
  2. In a Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the diced beef until browned. Add onion and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, molasses, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, pepper, and bay leaf.
  4. Add cooked beans and reserved liquid. Bring to a gentle simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  5. Cover and bake at 325°F (160°C) for 2–3 hours. Uncover for the last 20–30 minutes to thicken the sauce. Stir occasionally and add more liquid if needed.
  6. Remove bay leaf, adjust seasoning, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Add a small pinch of baking soda to boiling beans if they remain tough.
  • Adjust sauce thickness by adding more reserved liquid or baking uncovered longer.
